upcycling は up「上へ」と cycling から成り、cycle はギリシャ語 kyklos「輪・巡り」がラテン語経由で入った語です。recycle や bicycle と同根ですが、up が加わるため、「もう一巡させつつ価値まで引き上げる」という発想が語形に出ています。
