vetting の語源・成り立ち Etymology

vetting は動詞 vet の -ing 形。vet は veterinarian(獣医師)の短縮形から生じた語で、veterinarian はラテン語 veterinarius(荷役動物に関する)にさかのぼり、vetus(古い)に直接由来する語ではない。19世紀に動物を診察する意味で使われ、後に人物・書類・提案などを承認前に詳しく調べる意味へ広がった。

Vetting is the -ing form of vet, with the final t doubled. The verb vet developed from vet, a shortening of veterinarian. Veterinarian ultimately relates to Latin veterinarius, “concerning beasts of burden,” rather than directly to vetus, “old.” In the nineteenth century, to vet meant to examine an animal medically; it was later extended to the careful examination of people, documents, proposals, and information before approval.
