waar の語源・成り立ち Etymology
場所を表す副詞 waar は中期オランダ語 waer、古オランダ語の同系語を経たゲルマン語系の語で、英語 where と同根。形容詞 waar「本当の」は別の語源をもつため、verify や verity の直接の語源として扱わない。
The Dutch adverb waar, “where,” descends through Middle and Old Dutch from a Germanic interrogative form and is cognate with English where. The Dutch adjective waar, “true,” is a separate homonym with a different history; the adverb should not be connected etymologically with verify or verity.
