fibbing は fib「ちょっとした嘘」+ -ing。fib は語源未詳ですが、fibble-fable「たわごと」から出た説が有力で、さらに古フランス語・ラテン語由来の fable「作り話」に連なります。だから「大げさな虚構でなく軽い嘘」の感じが出ます。関連語は fable。
