walkは古英語wealcan（転がる、動き回る）に由来し、元は布を踏んで縮絨する動作を指した。次第に「足で移動する」意味に変化。独語walken（縮絨する）と同根。toは方向を示す古英語tōから。「歩いて～へ向かう」という基本的な移動表現。
