うわー、わあ

解説 Definition

うわー!わあ!(驚き・喜びを表す)

An interjection used to express strong surprise, admiration, or delight in immediate reaction to something impressive or unexpected. It can stand alone or introduce a short comment about what has caused the feeling.

覚え方のコツ Memory Tip

驚きや強い喜びを感じた瞬間に、思わず出る短い声として覚えましょう。Wow! のように単独で使うほか、Wow, that's big! のように文の前にも置けます。驚いて相手を止める whoa や、喜びを叫ぶ hooray とは感情と場面が異なります。

Think of wow as the short sound that comes out immediately when something surprises or impresses you. It may stand alone as “Wow!” or come before a reaction such as “Wow, that dog is big!” Connect it with the familiar verb phrase “say wow.” Unlike whoa, which often asks someone or something to slow down or stop, wow mainly communicates admiration, delight, or amazement. Unlike hooray, it does not necessarily celebrate a success.

例文

I say wow when I see it.

それを見ると、私は「わあ」と言います。

We see the big dog and say wow.

私たちはその大きな犬を見て、「うわー」と言います。

wow の語源・成り立ち Etymology

驚きや喜びを表す声から生まれたとされる英語の間投詞です。

Wow developed in English as an exclamation representing a spontaneous cry of surprise, pleasure, or admiration. Its precise earliest formation is not certain enough to connect it confidently with a more basic modern word. In present-day English, it is chiefly an interjection, although related uses later developed as a verb and noun, as in “The performance wowed the audience” and “the wow factor.”
