アラビア語 al-Yaman に由来し、「右側」または「南」を意味する。メッカから見て南（右手側）に位置することから名付けられた。古代ローマ人はこの地を Arabia Felix（幸福のアラビア）と呼び、乳香や没薬の交易で栄えた豊かな土地を指していた。
Yemen comes through Arabic al-Yaman. The name has traditionally been connected with an Arabic root referring to the right-hand side and, by geographical orientation, the south. From the perspective of someone facing east, south lies to the right. The region was known to ancient Greek and Roman writers as Arabia Felix, “Fortunate Arabia,” a name associated with its fertile areas and valuable trade in aromatic goods such as frankincense and myrrh.
