覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
zeta はギリシャ文字の第6字で、記号は大文字 Ζ、小文字 ζ です。alpha、beta から順番にたどり、「6番目の文字」と位置ごと覚えます。数学では zeta function、物理では量を表す記号として現れますが、基本の核はあくまで文字名です。英語では通常「ゼイタ」に近く発音されます。
Place zeta in the Greek alphabet rather than treating it as an ordinary English word: alpha, beta, gamma, delta, epsilon, then zeta in sixth position. Visualize its two forms, uppercase Ζ and lowercase ζ. In mathematics or physics, the same letter may label a quantity, and zeta function is a familiar technical combination, but the central meaning remains the name of the letter itself. English speakers commonly pronounce the name roughly as “ZAY-tuh,” which differs from the usual Japanese rendering ゼータ.

zeta の語源・成り立ち Etymology
zeta はギリシャ語の文字名 zeta に由来し、さらにフェニキア語 zayin にさかのぼるとされます。もとは文字 Z の名なので、数学でも順番ある記号名として使われ、「ゼータ」は“文字そのものの名”だと分かります。関連語はZ、zeta function。
English zeta is the Latinized form of Greek zēta, the traditional name of the sixth Greek letter. The Greek letter and its name ultimately developed from the Phoenician letter zayin when the Greek alphabet was adapted from a Semitic writing system. Zeta is therefore fundamentally a letter name. Its later mathematical and scientific uses arose because Greek letters became conventional symbols for quantities, variables, and named functions.
