Greek ēta is the traditional name of the letter Η or η. The letter developed from the Phoenician letter ḥēth, whose name is commonly associated with a fence or enclosure. In Greek it came to represent a long vowel in the classical language, although its pronunciation later changed. The Latin letter H ultimately derives from the same earlier letter tradition. Separately, English ETA is an initialism formed from estimated time of arrival, not an etymological development of the Greek word.
