解説 Definition
trooper は、兵士や警察官を指す名詞です。特にアメリカ英語では、高速道路の巡回や交通取締りを行う州警察官を表すことが多く、state trooper の形でよく使われます。一方で軍隊では、騎兵や機動部隊の兵士を意味することもあります。
A trooper is a soldier, especially one who serves in a cavalry or armored unit, or a state police officer in some countries, especially the US. The word can also describe someone who stays brave and dependable in a difficult situation.

trooper は troop「部隊・一団」に、〜する人を表す接尾辞 -er が付いた語で、troop は古フランス語 troupe に由来します。troupe と同根で、『集団の一員』が原義なので、そこから騎兵や州警察官など部隊所属の人を指す語になりました。
Trooper comes from troop plus the agent ending -er, so it originally meant a person belonging to a troop. Troop came into English through Old French troupe, meaning a band or company. From the general sense of "member of a group," trooper came to mean especially a cavalry soldier and later some kinds of police officer.
