gendarme はフランス語 gens d'armes に由来し、gens「人々」+ armes「武器」で、原義は『武装した人々』です。arm や army と同じ武器の語根をもつので、単なる警官でなく、軍事力を帯びた憲兵を指すのが腑に落ちます。
Gendarme comes from French gens d'armes, literally meaning "men of arms" or "armed men." It is made from gens "people, men" and armes "weapons," from the same root seen in English arm and army. The word first referred to armed troops, and later narrowed to a military-style police officer. That history explains why it still sounds more martial than an ordinary word for police.
