A trouper is a member of a group of actors or performers, especially in a traveling company. It can also mean someone who stays positive and keeps working hard even in a difficult situation. The second meaning is common in informal praise.

Trouper comes from troupe plus the agent suffix -er. Troupe was borrowed from French, where it meant a company or band, and it is related to troop. The word first meant a member of a theatrical company, and from that came the wider sense of someone who keeps going steadily as part of the group.
