ピューとは、キリスト教の教会内に設けられた信者が座るための長いベンチ型の座席を指す。通常、礼拝中に会衆が座るために並べられており、木製であることが多い。歴史的に特定の家族や地域の人々に割り当てられることもあった。

pew は古フランス語 puie / pui「高い場所・仕切られた席」に由来し、さらにラテン語 podium「台・高所」にさかのぼるとされます。podium も同根で、もとは教会内の少し高い囲い席を指したため、『仕切られた教会席』から長椅子の意味へ定着しました。
Pew came from Old French forms such as puie or pui, meaning a raised place or enclosed seat, and it is often linked further to Latin podium, "raised platform." It first referred to a special seat or enclosed space in a church. Over time, the word became the usual name for the long benches in churches. A related English word is podium.
