mop の語源・成り立ち Etymology
mop は中英語 mappe「布切れ・ひとまとまりの布」にさかのぼる語で、さらにラテン語 mappa「布、ナプキン」につながります。map や nappe も遠い同根とされ、もとは「布」だった語が「柄の先の布束」へ具体化して、今のモップの形そのものを表す語になりました。
Mop goes back to Middle English mappe, meaning a piece or bundle of cloth, and probably further to Latin mappa, meaning "cloth" or "napkin." The word first referred to the cloth itself. Later it came to mean a cleaning tool made from cloth attached to a handle.
