mustache は「顔の毛」全般ではなく、上唇の上だけのひげを指す語だと固定すると覚えやすいです。beard はあご・頬も含む「ひげ」全般なので、mustache はその一部分。goatee はあごひげで別物。grow a mustache, shave off his mustache, thick mustache のような形でよく出ます。つづりは must- で始まりますが must「〜ねば」とは無関係。moustache という別つづりにも注意すると混乱しにくいです。
