ascent はフランス語 ascente を経て、ラテン語 ascendere「上へ登る」にさかのぼります。ad-「〜へ」が as- に同化し、scandere「登る」と結びついた形で、ascend や descend と同根だとわかると、「上昇」という意味が語の骨組みそのものから理解できます。
Ascent came through French from Latin ascendere, meaning "to climb up." That Latin verb combines ad- "to" and scandere, "to climb," though the prefix changed form in pronunciation. The word kept the central image of upward climbing, and that is why it is closely related to ascend and, by contrast, descend.
