ascend を知っていれば、その現在分詞・形容詞形で「上がっていく状態」「上向きに並んだ状態」と取れる。反対は descending。特に覚えやすいのは ascending order で、数字や名前が小さい方・早い方から大きい方へ並ぶ「昇順」。increase が量の増加に寄りやすいのに対し、ascending は階段・坂・音階・順位など、下から上へ進む方向感が強い。動きでも並び順でも“上へ”を感じたらこの語。
