解説 Definition
afloat は、水に浮いたまま沈んでいない状態を表す形容詞。船や物体について使うほか、比喩的に会社や計画などが破綻せず、何とか持ちこたえて存続している状態も表す。困難の中で維持されているという含みを持つことが多い。

afloat は古英語 aflote にさかのぼり、a- は「〜の状態で」、float は「浮く・水面にある」を表します。つまり原義は「水に浮いたまま」で、float や flotation と結びつけると、「破綻せず持ちこたえる」という比喩も沈まず浮く像から納得できます。
