耳の側面から頬にかけて生える髪の毛のこと。顔の両側面に沿って伸びるひげのスタイルです。
Sideburns are the strips of hair that grow on the sides of a man's face in front of the ears. They are part of a hairstyle or facial hair style. The word is normally used in the plural form.

side が「横」だと分かれば、顔の side に沿ってある毛だとイメージしやすい単語です。hair 全体ではなく、耳の前から頬へ下りる部分だけを指すのがポイント。beard はあご周り、mustache は口の上なので、顔のどこにある毛かで区別すると混ざりません。barber で trim your sideburns のように出やすく、ふつうは左右セットの見た目なので sideburns と複数形で覚えると定着します。

sideburns は side「横」と burns から成りますが、この burns は19世紀の将軍 Burnside の姓が逆転して生まれました。つまり「横のひげ」が人名から普通名詞化した珍しい語で、形を見ると由来が腑に落ちます。関連語は sideboard、Burnside です。
Sideburns combines side with a form of Burnside, the surname of the 19th-century American general Ambrose Burnside, famous for his facial hair. His name was later reversed in popular use, changing Burnside into sideburn. The plural sideburns then became the normal everyday word. It is a rare example of a common noun formed from a person's name by reordering it.
