zircon は、ジルコンという鉱物を指す語です。宝石や地質学の文脈で使われ、日本語の「ジルコン」とほぼ同じですが、人工石のキュービックジルコニアとは別物です。
Zircon is a naturally occurring mineral composed mainly of zirconium silicate, often found as small crystals in rocks and sometimes cut as a gemstone. Its durable crystals are also important in geology for determining the ages of rocks.

アラビア語 zarqūn（辰砂・朱色）からペルシャ語 zargūn（金色の）を経て、ドイツ語 Zirkon から英語に入った。ペルシャ語 zar（金）+ gūn（色）が語源で、鉱物の色に由来する。派生語に金属元素名 zirconium がある。
English zircon was borrowed through German Zirkon. Its earlier history is associated with Persian zargūn, literally “gold-colored,” formed from zar, “gold,” and gūn, “color” or “hued.” Forms of the mineral name also passed through other languages, including Arabic, before reaching European scientific vocabulary. The mineral later gave its name to zirconium, the chemical element first identified from zircon-bearing material. The precise path of the earliest forms is complex, but the color association is well established.
