Real Estate Investment Trust の頭字語で「不動産投資信託」の略称。real はラテン語 res（物・財産）から派生した realis に由来し、estate は古フランス語 estat（状態・財産）から。不動産を証券化して投資可能にした金融商品を指す。
REIT is an acronym formed from Real Estate Investment Trust. Real estate refers to land and permanent property; investment identifies the use of capital to seek income or growth; and trust reflects the legal and financial structure historically used for pooled property ownership. Real ultimately relates to Latin res, “thing or property,” through realis, while estate came through Old French estat, “condition, status, or property.” The abbreviation became the standard name for this category of property investment vehicle.
