academician は academy「学園・学会・学士院」に「〜に属する人」を表す -ician が付いた語です。academy はギリシャ語 Akademeia に由来し、プラトンの学園名から「学問の場」へ意味が広がりました。そこから「学問機関で正式に認められた会員」、つまり学士院会員を指す語になりました。
