accentuation の語源・成り立ち Etymology
accentuation は中世ラテン語 accentuatio に由来し、accentuate＋-ion の形です。accent は ad-「〜へ」＋ cantus「歌」にさかのぼるため、アクセントは本来「声に歌を添えること」。関連語は accent、chant。
Accentuation comes from Medieval Latin accentuatio and is built from accentuate plus -ion. Accent goes back to Latin accentus, from ad- “to” and cantus “song,” so the earliest idea was of adding tone or musical stress to the voice. That is why the word later came to mean the placing or marking of stress in speech.
