覚え方のコツ Memory Tip

accuse「告発する」を知っていれば、その過去分詞 accused はまず「告発された」という受け身でつながる。そこから the accused で、法廷で罪を問われている「被告人」を指すと覚えると定着しやすい。accuse A of a crime の形で責められる側が accused。suspect はまだ容疑段階でも使えるが、accused は起訴や裁判の文脈に寄りやすい。the accused pleaded not guilty のような定番表現ごと覚えると実戦的。

Start with accuse someone of something and picture the person receiving that accusation. The -ed form describes that person in phrases such as the accused student. Remember that an accusation is a claim, not proof of guilt.

例文

The accused boy says, "I did nothing wrong."

告発された少年は「何も悪いことはしていない」と言います。

The accused girl says she took no money.

告発された少女は、お金を取っていないと言います。

The accused student says he did not cheat.

告発された生徒は、カンニングをしていないと言います。

accused の語源・成り立ち Etymology

accusedはaccuseの過去分詞が名詞化した語で、古フランス語acuserを経てラテン語accusareにさかのぼります。語源はad「〜に向けて」+ causa「訴訟・理由」で、「訴えを向けられた人」から被告人の意味に。関連語にaccusation、causeがあります。

Accused is the past participle of accuse, which comes through Old French acuser from Latin accusare. The Latin elements are ad, meaning toward, and causa, meaning a lawsuit or reason.
