アダム

解説 Definition

英語圏で一般的な男性の名前。聖書の創世記に登場する最初の人間の名に由来する。

Adam is a common male given name in English-speaking communities. It is also the name of the first human in the biblical book of Genesis.

覚え方のコツ Memory Tip

Adam は英語圏で一般的な男性名で、文中では本来 Adam と大文字で書く。聖書で土から造られた最初の人間の名なので、ヘブライ語で「大地」を表す adamah と結び付けると覚えやすい。例文では特別な象徴ではなく、到着した人や相談相手の名前として使われている。

Remember Adam as both a familiar English male name and the biblical name of the first human. Connect it with the Hebrew word adamah, meaning ground or earth: in Genesis, the first man is formed from the ground. In ordinary sentences such as “I asked Adam for advice,” however, it simply identifies a person. Because it is a proper name, write Adam with an initial capital letter, even though the dictionary headword appears in lowercase.

例文

Adam was the first one to arrive at the party.

アダムはパーティーに最初に到着しました。

Adam enjoys reading history books in his spare time.

アダムは暇な時間に歴史の本を読むのが好きです。

I asked Adam for advice about changing careers.

転職についてアダムにアドバイスを求めました。

adam の語源・成り立ち Etymology

ヘブライ語 adamah(土、大地)に由来する人名。旧約聖書で神が土から最初の人間を創ったことから「土の人」の意。赤い土を意味するadom(赤い)とも関連し、Adam は「人間」そのものを指す普通名詞でもあった。

The name Adam comes through biblical tradition from Hebrew ʾāḏām, a word associated with a human being or humankind. Genesis connects the name with ʾăḏāmāh, meaning ground or soil, because the first man is formed from the earth. It is also traditionally associated with words concerning redness or reddish earth. The biblical name later became widespread as a male given name in Christian, Jewish, and Muslim communities.
