覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
原形 adore に -ing を付けた現在分詞で、語末の e を落として adoring となる。発音は adore の語幹を保ち「アドーリング」に近い。be adoring someone なら「深く敬愛している」、adoring fans のように名詞の前なら「熱烈に慕う」。単なる like より愛情や賛美が強い。
Start with the base verb adore, meaning to love, admire, or revere deeply. To form adoring, drop the final silent e and add -ing; the stressed vowel and final sound of adore remain recognizable. Picture devoted fans watching a singer with intense admiration, or visitors reverently appreciating a sacred statue. This feeling is much stronger than simply liking something. In a continuous verb phrase, “were adoring” presents the feeling or behavior as ongoing; before a noun, as in “adoring fans,” it describes people whose affection is obvious.

adoring の語源・成り立ち Etymology
ラテン語の接頭辞ad-(〜の方へ)と語根or(祈る・語る)に由来し、古フランス語を経由します。神に向かって敬虔に語りかけるのが原義で、後に宗教的畏敬から相手への深い敬愛へ意味が自然に転じました。同語根にはoratory(雄弁)などが挙げられます。
Adoring is formed from adore by dropping its final silent e and adding the present-participle suffix -ing. Adore came through Old French from Latin adorare, built from ad-, “toward,” and orare, “to speak, plead, or pray.” It originally referred especially to addressing or worshipping a deity. Its meaning later broadened from religious reverence to profound admiration and affectionate love for people or things.
