afoot は foot（足）に由来し、「歩いて、徒歩で」という意味で使われる語です。現代ではやや古風な響きがあり、be afoot の形で「歩いている」状態を表すことがあります。
Used after a linking verb to describe someone who is traveling or moving on foot rather than using a vehicle. In this sense, it has a somewhat old-fashioned or literary tone.

afoot は古英語 on fote / on fotum（徒歩で）が縮まった語で、a- は on の弱化、foot は古英語 fot にさかのぼります。もとは「足で」がそのまま語義なので、「歩いて」「進行中」の感覚になります。関連語は foot, foothold。
