agama は学名ラテン語 Agama を経た語で、さらにスリナム系クレオール語 agama、もとは西アフリカの Gbe 語群で「カメレオン」を表す語に由来します。外来の生き物名がそのまま英語化した形で、関連語に Agamidae、agamid があり、「アガマトカゲ」が分類名として定着したと分かります。
