解説 Definition
ヤモリは主に熱帯地域などに生息する小型の爬虫類で、体を壁や天井に吸着させる特殊な足を持っています。夜行性で昆虫を食べることが多く、暑く湿った環境を好みます。人家の照明まわりなどで見かけることもあります。

gecko はマレー語 gekoq に由来し、ヤモリの鳴き声をまねた擬音語がそのまま英語に入った語です。つまり名前自体が「ゲッコー」と聞こえる声の写しで、日本語の擬音語に近い成り立ちです。関連語として geckoid, Gekkonidae があります。
