The name Alaska ultimately comes from an Aleut-language place-name, commonly represented as alaxsxaq. It has been interpreted along the lines of “the mainland” or the land toward which the sea's action is directed. Russian explorers and colonists adopted the Indigenous name, and it passed into English through Russian usage. After the United States purchased the territory from Russia in 1867, Alaska remained its official name and later became the name of the state.
