古英語 scīrgerēfa（scīr「州・郡」＋ gerēfa「長官」）が語源。「州の長官」が原義で、中英語で sheriff に縮約された。shire（州）と同根。アメリカでは郡の法執行責任者として定着し「保安官」の訳が当てられた。
This word comes from Old English scirgerefa, made of scir "shire" or "county" and gerefa "official" or "reeve." It originally meant the chief officer of a shire, and over time the long form was shortened to sheriff. The first part is the same root seen in shire.
