「county」はラテン語 comitatus「伯爵の支配地」が古フランス語経由で入った語です。comit- が核で、count や viscount と同根。つまり本来は「count が治める区域」で、今の「郡」に封建時代の名残が残っています。
County comes through Old French from Latin comitatus, meaning the territory ruled by a count. In its earlier history, the word was tied to feudal government and a noble's area of control.
