allow の語源・成り立ち Etymology
allow は古フランス語 alouer を経て中世ラテン語 allocare にさかのぼり、ad-「〜へ」+ locare「置く」から成ります。local や location も同根で、もとは「場所や立場を与える」ことから、「認める・許す」意味へ伸びました。
Allow came into English through Old French alouer and goes back to Medieval Latin allocare. It is formed from ad- "to" and locare "to place." The early idea was giving something its place or assigning it properly, and from there the word developed into approving or permitting. Related words include local and location.
