apothecary はギリシャ語 apotheke「しまう場所」がラテン語・古フランス語を経て入った語。apo-「離して」＋theke「置き場」で、discotheque や bibliotheca も同じ核。もとは薬を保管する人で、「薬の番人」という像が先にある。
