Carriage came into Middle English from Old Northern French carier, "to carry," and goes back further to Late Latin carricare, based on carrus, meaning "wagon" or "cart." It first referred to the act or cost of carrying. Later it came to mean a vehicle for carrying people, especially a horse-drawn one.
