sepia はギリシャ語 sēpia「コウイカ」からラテン語 sepia を経た語で、分解できる接辞はほぼない。sepian や sepiaceous も同系で、色名が先ではなく「コウイカの墨で作る絵の具」からあの茶褐色を指すようになったと分かる。
Sepia came through Latin from Greek sēpia, meaning "cuttlefish." The word was first the name of the animal, especially linked to the dark ink it produces. From that, it later came to name the brownish color made from or resembling that ink.
