大司教区
解説 Definition
大司教区とは、大司教が管轄する教会上の区域です。カトリック教会などで使われ、通常の diocese「教区」より高い位置づけを持つことがありますが、常に複数の教区を内部に含むとは限りません。
An archdiocese is an important church area governed by an archbishop. It is used mainly in Roman Catholic and some other Christian church organizations.

archdiocese は arch-「上位の・長の」＋diocese「教区」と分け、「大司教が管轄する教区」と組み立てて覚えます。archbishop「大司教」が leads an archdiocese という対応関係を一組にすると明快です。地図上で一つの広い教会区域を大司教が統轄している場面を固定しましょう。ただし「必ず複数の教区を内包する区域」と決めつけず、名称はその区域を率いる地位に注目します。the Archdiocese of Tokyo のような固有名では通常大文字にし、covers an area、organizes an event も頻出です。

ギリシャ語 arkhi-「長・上位の」と dioikesis「管理・管区」が、後期ラテン語 archidioecesis を経て英語に入った語です。arch- は archbishop、diocese は diocese と同系で、「教会管区の中でも上位を治める区」と考えると大司教区の意味がつかめます。
From Late Latin archidioecesis, based on Greek elements: arkhi- meaning "chief" or "highest," and dioikesis meaning "administration" or "district." It is related to archbishop and diocese. The word came to mean a church district of higher rank, led by an archbishop.
