「試練」の語義はスウェーデン語 gatlopp（通路を走らせる刑）由来で、gata「道」+ lopp「走り」。「籠手」の語義は古フランス語 gantelet「小手袋」からで、同根に gant がある。綴りが同じでも実は二つの語源が合流した語。
