困難な試験や試練のことを指し、厳しい環境や批判を通り抜けて次の段階へ進む様子を表す。もともとは中世の騎士が敵の間を通過する「籠手（がんとく）」を通される儀礼から来ており、直接の力試しというニュアンスも含む。

「試練」の語義はスウェーデン語 gatlopp（通路を走らせる刑）由来で、gata「道」+ lopp「走り」。「籠手」の語義は古フランス語 gantelet「小手袋」からで、同根に gant がある。綴りが同じでも実は二つの語源が合流した語。
Gauntlet is actually a merger of two different words. The sense of a trial or ordeal comes from Swedish gatlopp, literally "running a passage," from gata "road" and lopp "run." The glove sense comes from Old French gantelet, a diminutive of gant "glove."
