glove は古英語 glof にさかのぼるゲルマン系の語で、はっきりした接頭辞・接尾辞には分けにくい単純語です。『手を包んで守るもの』という働きがそのまま名になった語で、gloveless や foxglove にも同じ glove の形が残ります。
Glove comes from Old English `glof`, an old Germanic word with no clear smaller parts in modern English. It originally named the covering worn on the hand for protection or warmth. Later words such as `gloveless` keep the same old root.
