覚え方のコツ Memory Tip

are は you、we、they と複数名詞に使う be 動詞の現在形です。You are kind では性質、We are ready では状態、The keys are here では所在を表します。会話では you're、we're、they're と短縮され、否定形は are not または aren't です。「I は am、he/she/it は is、それ以外は are」という対応表で覚えると迷いにくくなります。

Group are with its usual subjects: you are, we are, they are, and plural nouns are. Compare the full present-tense pattern: I am, he or she is, and everything in the you-we-they or plural group takes are. Use it for qualities, states, and locations, as in You are kind, We are ready, and The keys are on the table. Common contractions are you’re, we’re, and they’re; the negative is are not or aren’t. In questions, move are before the subject: Are you ready?

例文

You are very kind.

あなたはとても親切です。

We are ready to leave.

私たちは出発する準備ができています。

The keys are on the table.

鍵はテーブルの上にあります。

are の語源・成り立ち Etymology

are は be 動詞の現在形の一つです。古英語末期から中英語にかけて、古ノルド語の複数形 eru などの影響を受けて広まり、従来の複数形に代わりました。現代英語では you、we、they、および複数名詞を主語に取ります。

Are is one of the present-tense forms of be. It became widespread in late Old English and Middle English, with influence from Old Norse plural forms such as eru, and gradually replaced earlier native plural forms in many varieties. The verb be combines historically distinct forms, accounting for the modern pattern am, is, and are. Today are is standard with you, we, they, plural nouns, and coordinated subjects.
