英語で最も基本的な動詞の一つで、「〜である」「いる・ある」を表すほか、進行形や受け身を作る補助動詞としても使う。am, is, are, was, were など形が多く、主語や時制に応じて変化するため、文全体の骨組みを作る語といえる。
