解説 Definition

subjects は subject(科目)の複数形です。学校で学ぶ数学、理科、英語などの複数の科目を指します。

Subjects are separate areas of knowledge or study taught at a school, college, or university, such as mathematics, science, and English. This is the plural form of subject.

覚え方のコツ Memory Tip

subjects は subject「科目」の複数形で、語末が無声音 /t/ なので -s は /s/ と発音します。「好きな科目」は favorite subjects、「学校で六科目を学ぶ」は study six subjects のように、複数の授業分野をまとめて思い浮かべましょう。単数なら a subject、複数なら subjects です。

Connect subjects directly with the singular subject, meaning one area studied at school. The regular plural ending -s is added because the examples refer to several areas, such as math and science. After the voiceless /t/ at the end of subject, the plural -s is pronounced /s/, so subjects ends with /ts/. Remember useful combinations such as favorite subjects, school subjects, study six subjects, and choose your subjects. Use a subject for one course area and subjects for two or more.

We study six subjects at school.

subjects の語源・成り立ち Etymology

subject はラテン語 sub-「下に」+ jacere「投げる・置く」に由来し、古フランス語を経て英語に入りました。もとは「下に置かれたもの」で、そこから支配下の民や、学習の対象として扱う「科目」の意味へ広がりました。同根語に object, inject があります。

Subject entered English through Old French from Latin subjectus, the past participle of subicere, “to place under,” formed from sub-, “under,” and jacere, “to throw or place.” Something placed under consideration became a topic or object of study, which led to the school sense “area of knowledge studied.” Subjects is the regular plural form, made by adding -s.
