解説 Definition
be動詞の現在形で、主語が I のときに状態、性質、身分や所在などを表すために使う。
Am is the first-person singular present form of the verb be. It follows I to connect the speaker with a state, quality, identity, location, or other description, and it also helps form certain continuous and passive constructions.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
am は「私」を表す I だけと組み合わせる be 動詞の現在形です。I am happy なら状態、I am a student なら身分、I am at home なら所在を表します。会話では I'm と短縮されることが多い一方、否定は I am not、疑問文は Am I ...? となります。I-am を一つの基本セットとして、are や is と区別して覚えると定着しやすいでしょう。
Learn I am as a fixed present-tense pair. Use it for a state in I am tired, an identity in I am a student, or a location in I am at home. Other present forms of be use different subjects: he, she, and it take is, while you, we, and they take are. In conversation and informal writing, I am commonly contracts to I’m. The negative is I am not, and a question reverses the order: Am I late? Keeping these complete patterns together is more useful than memorizing am alone.
例文
I am tired today.
今日は疲れています。
I am a student.
私は学生です。
I am at home now.
私は今、家にいます。
am の語源・成り立ち Etymology
am は be 動詞の一人称単数現在形で、古英語 eom に由来します。さらにゲルマン祖語の同系形を経て、インド・ヨーロッパ祖語の「存在する」を表す語根にさかのぼります。現代英語では I am の組み合わせに限って用いられます。
Am is the first-person singular present form of be and descends from Old English eom. Its history continues through related Germanic forms to an Indo-European root associated with existence. Modern be combines forms that developed from more than one ancient verb, which explains its unusually irregular present-tense pattern: am, is, and are. In standard modern English, am is used with the subject I, including in the contraction I’m.
