armature は、彫刻で粘土などを支える内部の骨組みを指すほか、電気機器では磁界の中で電流を受けたり起こしたりする部分、つまり電機子を指します。美術と工学で意味が大きく異なるため、文脈に応じて理解する必要があります。

armatureはフランス語経由でラテン語armatura「武装・装備」にさかのぼり、語幹arm-はarma「道具・武器」に由来します。armorやarmoryと同根で、もとは“何かを支える装備”だと分かると、骨組みや電機子の意味も土台の部品として見えてきます。
Armature came through French from Latin armatura, meaning "equipment" or "arming," from arma, "tools" or "weapons." It is related to armor and armory. The sense moved from general equipment to a supporting framework or fitted working part, especially in art and machinery.
