人や動物の体を支える骨の全体、または建物・計画などの基本となる枠組みを指す語。実際の骨格そのものだけでなく、物事の全体像を成り立たせる中心的な構造や土台という比喩的な意味でも使われることがある。
A skeleton is the set of bones that supports the body of a person or animal. It gives the body shape and helps protect important organs. The word can also mean the basic framework of something.

skeleton は近代ラテン語 sceleton を経て、ギリシャ語 skeleton soma「干からびた体」に由来します。語根は skeletos「乾いた」で、肉が落ちて骨だけ残った姿だと考えると意味が腑に落ちます。関連語は skeletal、sclerosis です。
Skeleton comes through Modern Latin from Greek skeleton, short for skeleton soma, meaning "dried-up body." It is related to a Greek root meaning "dry." The word first referred to a body with the flesh gone, and then came to mean the bare framework of bones; related English words include skeletal.
