arrondissement の語源・成り立ち Etymology
arrondissement はフランス語で、arrondir「丸くする・整える」+ 名詞語尾 -ment からできた語です。語根 rond はラテン語 rotundus「丸い」に由来し、境界を整えて区切った「行政区」の意味になりました。関連語に round、rotund があります。
Arrondissement was borrowed from French. It is formed from arrondir, “to make round,” “round off,” or “arrange,” and the noun-forming suffix -ment. Arrondir contains rond, “round,” which ultimately goes back to Latin rotundus, also the source of English rotund and related to round. The French noun developed an administrative sense for a territory whose limits had been arranged or defined, including both urban districts and larger subdivisions.
