覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
most は『いちばん多い』なので、at most は『最大のところで見ても』と考えると『多くても』『せいぜい』に自然につながります。数量・時間・回数などの上限を示す言い方で、at least が『少なくとも』という下限なのとセットで覚えると定着しやすいです。This will take at most 10 minutes. なら『10分を超えない』感覚。almost と形が近いですが、こちらは『ほとんど』なので混同に注意。
Think of `most` as the maximum point. So `at most` means "if you look at the highest limit". Learn it as the pair of `at least`: one gives the lower limit, the other gives the upper limit. Also be careful not to mix it up with `almost`, which looks similar but means something very different.
例文
Take at most three books.
本はせいぜい3冊まで取りなさい。
I eat at most two eggs.
私はせいぜい卵を2個食べます。
The bag holds at most five apples.
そのかばんにはせいぜいリンゴが5個入ります。

at most の語源・成り立ち Etymology
atは古英語æt(~のところに)、mostは古英語māst(最大の)から。「最大の点においても」が原義で、上限を示す表現に転じた。関連語:almost(ほとんど=al+most)、utmost(最大限)。
This phrase is built from Old English words: at from æt, meaning "at" or "to," and most from māst, meaning "greatest" or "largest." The original idea was "even at the greatest point." From there, it came to mean the upper limit of something. Related words include almost and utmost.
