author を知っていればそのまま広げやすい語。まず「author＝著者」を土台にし、-ial は industrial, editorial などと同じく「〜に関する」を作る形容詞語尾だと押さえると、authorial は「著者としての／著者特有の」と取りやすい。単に written「書かれた」ではなく、authorial voice, authorial intent のように、作品の背後にいる書き手の意図・立場・語りの癖を指すときによく使う。authoritative「権威ある」と形が似るので、authorial はあくまで「著者側」に結びつけて覚えると混同しにくい。
