A bacteriophage is a virus that infects and destroys bacteria. It is studied in biology, medicine, and genetics because it can affect bacterial growth. The shorter form phage is also common in scientific use.

まず bacterio- を bacteria（細菌）と結びつける。後半の -phage は phagocyte（食細胞）にも入る「食う」系の形で覚えると、全体で「細菌をねらって食う側」という像が作れる。ポイントは bacterium そのものではなく、bacteria に感染する virus だという点。antibiotic が薬で細菌を抑えるのに対し、bacteriophage は phage therapy などで特定の細菌を狙う文脈に出やすい。
