細菌とは単細胞の微生物で、さまざまな環境で単独または集団で生活しながら増殖します。多くは人間の体内や土壌などに常在していて無害ですが、一部は傷口や呼吸器を通じて感染症の原因になります。栄養や水分を吸収して分裂を繰り返し、その性質によって病原性や有用性が異なります。

bacteriumはギリシャ語 bakterion「小さな杖、棒」が語源で、bakter-「棒」に -ium が付いた形。bacteria や bacteriology と同根で、初期に見えた棒状の形から「細菌」が名づけられたと知ると、見た目由来の語だと腑に落ちる。
